Supporting Community Through Art – My Commission for Emmaus
Art has the power to tell stories, strengthen communities, and encourage positive change. That’s why I was thrilled to collaborate with Emmaus, a local charity dedicated to community support and homelessness prevention. They commissioned me to create a community-themed collage, celebrating local businesses and encouraging people to invest in their own neighborhoods.

The Vision Behind the Project
Emmaus wanted a visual statement—something that would not only add vibrancy to their space but also serve as a reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses. Their mission aligns with my own belief that strong communities are built when we support one another, and I wanted to reflect that in my work.
Capturing the Community
To create the collage, I spent time walking through the streets, camera in hand, capturing the essence of local independent businesses. From family-run cafes to street markets and historic shopfronts, I wanted to showcase the heart of the community—the people and places that make our neighborhoods unique.
After gathering the photographs, I began layering them together in a vibrant, textured collage, blending elements of Bristol’s architecture, street life, and the energy of its small businesses. The final piece became a dynamic tapestry of color, movement, and local identity.
Bringing the Artwork to Life
Once the design was complete, we printed it onto large composite metal boards, ensuring it could withstand the elements while maintaining its bold, detailed look. These panels were then used to clad the exterior of Emmaus, turning their space into a living artwork—a visual celebration of the local businesses and people they work so hard to support.
Why Local Matters
In an era of mass production and chain stores, independent businesses are what keep a city’s identity alive. They bring character, personal connections, and economic stability to our communities. This project wasn’t just about art—it was about sending a message: where we spend our money matters.
Final Thoughts
This commission was an amazing opportunity to merge my love for collage with a cause I deeply believe in. Seeing my work become part of the local landscape, supporting both Emmaus and the businesses it highlights, was incredibly rewarding.
I hope that when people walk by the artwork, they take a moment to appreciate the local shops and services around them—and maybe even choose to support them in their next purchase.
